Certified Chimney Sweeps in Kansas City, MO — 6 CSIA-Certified Companies Verified
Greater Kansas City has 6 verified CSIA-certified chimney sweep companies, including two Master Chimney Sweeps (MCS), operating across the bi-state MO/KS metro. The market is anchored by Full Service Chimney (the first CSIA-certified sweep in Johnson County, est. 1987) and supplemented by several long-established owner-operators predating the CSIA certification program. The metro's complex jurisdictional landscape — spanning nine counties across two states, each with separate contractor licensing requirements — combined with an aging housing stock (21.6% of KCMO homes built before 1940) makes CSIA certification and local licensing verification especially important for Kansas City homeowners.
This market has a significant and growing problem with fraudulent Google Business Profiles. Our research identified 10+ suspected spam or lead-generation listings, including a coordinated network of template-clone websites (Precision Chimney Sweep and Chimney Master KC share identical site code), exact-match keyword domains, and a national multi-service company using a virtual office address in Overland Park. The NCSG documented a specific impersonation case targeting 21st Century Chimney Sweep in Lawrence, KS. Per KSHB 41 News, the NCSG has taken down close to 100 fraudulent listings nationally, with Brett Conklin of the NCSG Board warning: “as soon as you take them down, they start popping up again.”
Every company in this directory was evaluated through CSIA credential verification via search.csia.org, NCSG membership cross-referencing, BBB business history checks, physical address verification, bi-state contractor license records, and multi-platform review analysis. Spam and lead-generation listings are documented in our fraud warnings section — they do not receive business cards. The CSIA directory (search.csia.org) is JavaScript-rendered, limiting comprehensive verification; phone confirmation with CSIA (317-837-5362) is recommended for definitive current status.

Kansas City Housing Stock & Chimney Architecture
Historic KCMO Neighborhoods: Masonry Chimneys
Kansas City’s older core neighborhoods — Brookside, Waldo, Hyde Park, Westport, and Midtown — are dominated by homes built between 1900 and 1945, featuring traditional masonry chimneys with clay flue liners now 80 to 120+ years old. The Country Club District, developed by J.C. Nichols beginning in 1906, is the architectural crown jewel: hundreds of Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and French Normandy homes with elaborate, highly decorative chimney stacks positioned as dominant design features. Original mortar in these pre-1930s homes was lime-based, requiring compatible restoration mortar — not modern Portland cement, which can damage softer historic brick. Chimney repairs on homes listed on the Kansas City Register of Historic Places may require historically sensitive materials and techniques.
Kansas Suburbs: Prefabricated Chimneys
The Kansas suburbs of Overland Park (median construction year: 1989) and Olathe are dominated by 1970s–2000s construction where prefabricated, factory-built chimneys enclosed in wood-framed chases with siding or stucco exteriors are far more common. These systems present distinct maintenance challenges: chase cover rust, deteriorating flashing, and worn factory components that differ fundamentally from masonry chimney repair needs.
Freeze-Thaw Cycles & Tornado Weather
Kansas City’s continental climate produces extremes — summers regularly exceeding 90°F and winters dropping well below freezing. This generates dozens of freeze-thaw cycles per winter: moisture absorbed into porous masonry freezes and expands by approximately 9%, then contracts when thawing. This accelerates spalling, mortar deterioration, and crack propagation. Kansas City also sits in Tornado Alley, averaging 40–60 thunderstorm days per year. Even EF-0 tornadoes (winds under 85 mph) can displace chimney structures. Large hail (commonly 1–2 inches in diameter) damages caps, crowns, and brick faces. Full Service Chimney reports finding leaks in chimney flashing or flue caps in 4 out of 5 chimneys inspected. Waterproofing with vapor-permeable sealant is recommended, with reapplication every 5–10 years.
Bi-State Licensing Complexity
Neither Missouri nor Kansas mandates a statewide chimney contractor license. On the Missouri side, Kansas City requires contractors to obtain licensing through the City Planning & Development Department, including passing an ICC exam and carrying $1 million in general liability insurance. On the Kansas side, Johnson County requires a separate contractor license with similar exam and insurance thresholds ($100 application fee plus $225 license fee). Wyandotte County (KCK) only requires a business license. A chimney company serving the full KC metro must secure and maintain licenses in multiple jurisdictions simultaneously — an operational burden that favors established, well-organized firms. CSIA certification serves as the de facto industry standard in the absence of state-level chimney-specific regulation.
Chimney Sweep Spam & Fraud Warnings in Kansas City
The chimney sweep industry has a documented epidemic of fraudulent Google Business Profiles. Per KSHB 41 News (Kansas City, February/March 2026), the NCSG has identified and taken down close to 100 fraudulent chimney sweep Google Business listings nationwide. Brett Conklin (NCSG Board) states: “as soon as you take them down, they start popping up again.” A documented case in the KC metro involves scammers creating fake listings impersonating 21st Century Chimney Sweep in Lawrence, KS. Our research identified 10+ suspected spam or lead-generation listings:
Two websites run by the same operator using identical templates with only the company name swapped: Precision Chimney Sweep (precisionchimneysweep.com, 4617 Jefferson St, Kansas City, MO 64112) and Chimney Master KC (chimney-master.com). Red flags: verbatim identical code and layout; exact-match keyword domains; no owner name or founding year; claims “Fast Arrival in 20 Minutes” and 24/7 availability; $49 promo inspection (loss-leader bait); only 1 generic testimonial; 0 Yelp reviews. Both also share near-identical copy with other suspected lead-gen entries: Expert Chimney Sweeper (913-221-0729) and Top Chimney Sweeps (816-573-3499).
Chimney Sweep & Cleaning Lees Summit (leessummitchimneysweep.us): explicitly refers to “our network of professionals” and “our service providers” — classic lead-gen language; no owner, address, or certifications; mentions “Commercial Air Duct Cleaning.” Lee’s Summit Chimney (leessummitchimney.com): exact city-name domain; no owner or founding date; claims “certified chimney company” without naming certifying body; contains typos (“thurough”). chimneysweep.com/missouri/: national toll-free number identical for Independence, KC, Liberty, Lee’s Summit, Raytown, and St. Joseph — pure national lead aggregator.
Local Air Duct Pros (Overland Park/North KC area): multi-service operation (air duct + chimney + HVAC); Yelp rating 1.0–1.5 stars; customer review confirms “no real office”; subcontracts to unknown company “I & A Services.” Kansas City Air Duct Pros: city-keyword name pattern; 0 Yelp reviews; multi-service (air duct + chimney); no verifiable information.
United Home Services (unitedhomeservices.com, 12441 W 119th St #1222, Overland Park, KS 66213): HQ in Plano, TX; suite #1222 strongly indicates virtual office or mailbox service; KC page title reads “Chimney Sweep Dallas, TX” — wrong city in metadata; no local KC staff named; multi-service (air duct + chimney + dryer vent + insulation + A/C + roofing + garage doors); templated city pages. Holds legitimate corporate-level CSIA/BBB credentials, but homeowners cannot verify which specific technicians are certified for KC jobs.
Chimney Masters (3710 Tracy Ave, Kansas City, MO 64109): 0 reviews on YellowBot; only 5 Facebook likes; multi-service (carpet cleaning + chimney + janitorial + water damage); appears residential address. Safe Sweep (safesweepks.com): keyword-style domain with state abbreviation; no owner name or founding date; claims “certified” without specifying certification body; no verifiable physical address.
Consumer verification checklist: Verify CSIA certification at search.csia.org and NCSG membership at ncsg.org/find-a-chimney-sweep. Confirm a real physical address via Google Street View (look for signage, marked vehicles). Demand written inspection reports with photos. Be wary of prices dramatically below market ($49 inspections are bait). Verify phone area codes match service area (816/913 for KC metro). Ensure technicians arrive in marked vehicles with identification. Report suspected fraud to the NCSG at office@ncsg.org or (317) 837-1500.
Emergency & Seasonal Chimney Service — Kansas City
True chimney emergencies (chimney fires, carbon monoxide events, post-tornado structural damage, flue blockage causing CO risk) require immediate professional response. Note that several companies advertising “24/7 emergency service” in the KC area have been identified as suspected spam or lead-generation operations (see Fraud Warnings section above). The most established KC companies — Full Service Chimney, Sleep Easy Chimney, HearthMasters — do not make 24/7 claims; they operate standard business hours with weather-event prioritization.
| Company | Emergency Response | Phone | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Service Chimney | Storm damage prioritization; dedicated storm damage page | (913) 642-6171 | CSIA MCS; insurance claim partner; largest KC company; M–F 8am–5pm |
| Chimney Restoration of KC | Weather emergency schedule bumping (customer-confirmed) | (913) 374-7902 | CSIA CCS; multiple reviews confirm rapid response for active water intrusion |
| HearthMasters | Fire investigation capability for serious incidents | (816) 461-3665 | CSIA CCS; MO State Certified Private Fire Investigator; office hours 10am–5pm Mon–Fri |
Post-severe-weather protocol: After any tornado, severe thunderstorm, lightning strike, or major hail event, the NFPA recommends a Level 2 inspection with video camera before using your fireplace again. If a gas furnace or water heater vents through a chimney that may be damaged or blocked, treat it as an immediate carbon monoxide emergency. KC Fire Department average response: under 4 minutes (call 911 for active emergencies). Peak season bottleneck: October through December — expect extended wait times for all services. Late spring through early fall (May–September) is the best window for scheduling non-emergency work, including major repairs and waterproofing.
Kansas City Market Overview
Kansas City’s chimney service market operates across one of the most complex jurisdictional landscapes in the United States. The metro straddles the Missouri-Kansas state line, splitting the core urban area between two states, nine principal counties, and dozens of municipalities, each with separate licensing requirements. Neither Missouri nor Kansas mandates a statewide chimney contractor license, making CSIA certification the de facto standard for consumer protection in this market.
The competitive landscape features approximately 6 confirmed or evidenced CSIA-certified operators anchored by Full Service Chimney (since 1987, 14+ employees, 20,000+ customers) and supplemented by several veteran owner-operators predating the certification program (Raytown Chimney since 1981; The Artful Duster since 1977; HearthMasters since 1982). The market also contends with a documented epidemic of fraudulent Google Business Profiles. Per the NCSG, approximately 100 fake listings have been removed nationally, with confirmed impersonation cases in the KC metro including a fake GBP targeting 21st Century Chimney Sweep in Lawrence, KS.
Additional CSIA-certified companies with directory profiles found but insufficient data to publish full cards include: AAA Chimney Sweep & Fire Protection Co. (search.csia.org/company_profile/chimney-sweep-and-fire-protection-company), KR Chimney Services, Family Chimney Repair, 21st Century Chimney Sweep (Lawrence, KS), and Neighborhood Chimney Care & LeavesOut LLC. An NCSG Accredited Certified Chimney Professional (Unattached Certified Member) was also identified: Flue Fighters KC (4637 Tracy Ave, Kansas City, MO 64110, (913) 428-0848). These companies require direct outreach or phone verification to publish complete information.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should Kansas City homeowners get chimney inspections?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends annual chimney inspections for all KC-area homes, regardless of how often you use your fireplace. Kansas City’s harsh freeze-thaw cycles and frequent severe thunderstorms make annual checkups especially important, as weather damage can develop between seasons without visible exterior signs. If you burn wood more than once a week, consider more frequent cleanings to prevent dangerous creosote buildup. Schedule in late spring through early fall to avoid the October–December peak rush.
What does a chimney sweep cost in Kansas City?
A standard chimney cleaning in the Kansas City metro typically runs $200–$329 for a single-flue system, with prices ranging from $150 to $499 depending on chimney type, condition, and complexity. Full Service Chimney publishes a range of $150–$499. HearthMasters publishes specific KC pricing: open wood fireplace sweep + inspect $299; freestanding wood stove $369; insert with liner $329; gas log inspection/service $329; 2-sided fireplace $499. Chimney Medic publishes $315 for woodstove/insert cleaning with Level 1 inspection. A Level 2 inspection with video camera runs $300–$500. Avoid “$49 inspection” promotions — this pricing is a documented red flag for lead-generation fraud in the KC market.
Do I need a chimney sweep if I have a gas fireplace?
Yes — gas fireplaces still require annual inspection and periodic cleaning. While gas burns cleaner than wood and produces no creosote, it emits significant moisture that can damage your flue liner over time. KC chimney professionals check for debris buildup, cracks in the liner, animal nesting (a common issue in the metro area), and carbon monoxide hazards. A blocked gas flue can cause deadly CO to back up into your home. Gas log inspection and service typically runs $329 in KC (per HearthMasters published pricing).
How do Kansas City's freeze-thaw cycles affect my chimney?
Kansas City’s extreme temperature swings — often fluctuating above and below freezing multiple times per week in winter — are one of the leading causes of chimney deterioration in the metro. Water in your chimney’s brick and mortar freezes and expands by approximately 9%, then contracts when thawing. This cycle causes spalling (brick faces flaking off), crumbling mortar joints, and widening cracks. Left unaddressed, freeze-thaw damage can compromise structural integrity within just a few winters. Full Service Chimney reports finding leaks in 4 out of 5 KC chimneys inspected. Waterproofing and timely tuckpointing are the best defenses; waterproofing should be reapplied every 5–10 years.
What chimney damage should I look for after a tornado or severe storm?
After severe weather in the KC metro, inspect your chimney from the ground for visible cracks, loose or missing bricks, a dislodged chimney cap, and damage to flashing. Brick or mortar fragments on the ground or roof are clear warning signs. However, significant internal damage — especially from lightning strikes — is often invisible externally. KC chimney professionals recommend a Level 2 inspection with video camera after any major weather event ($300–$500). If you have a gas furnace or water heater venting through the chimney, a potentially blocked flue poses an immediate carbon monoxide risk. Contact Full Service Chimney or Chimney Restoration of KC for storm damage prioritization.
Are chimney sweeps licensed differently in Missouri vs. Kansas?
Yes. Neither state has a statewide chimney-specific license. On the Missouri side, Kansas City requires contractors to obtain licensing through the City Planning and Development Department, including an ICC exam and $1 million in general liability insurance. On the Kansas side, Johnson County requires a separate contractor license with similar requirements (ICC exam at 75%+, $1 million liability insurance, workers’ comp; $100 application fee plus $225 license fee). Wyandotte County (KCK) only requires a business license. A company serving the full KC metro must hold licenses in multiple jurisdictions simultaneously. CSIA certification (Chimney Safety Institute of America) is the gold standard for competence since state-level chimney licensing does not exist in either state.
What is the best time of year to schedule chimney service in KC?
Late spring through early fall (May–September) is typically the best window. Most homeowners wait until fall, creating a seasonal rush from October through December that extends wait times for all KC chimney companies. Scheduling off-season means shorter wait times, more flexible scheduling, and time to complete repairs before the heating season. Spring is also ideal for assessing winter freeze-thaw damage before summer rains worsen cracks or mortar deterioration. If you need storm damage assessment, schedule immediately after the event rather than waiting — especially if a gas appliance vents through the potentially affected chimney.
How do I know if my chimney needs tuckpointing?
Tuckpointing is especially common in KC’s older neighborhoods — Brookside, Waldo, Hyde Park, and the Country Club District — where homes are 80–120+ years old. Warning signs: mortar crumbling, receding, or missing between bricks; white staining (efflorescence) on brick; brick faces flaking or chipping (spalling); visible gaps where mortar should be. If caught early, tuckpointing saves your chimney from a full rebuild. In historic neighborhoods, insist on lime-based mortar compatible with pre-1930s brick — modern Portland cement is too hard and can cause adjacent brick to crack. Full Service Chimney publishes tuckpointing rates of $550–$2,500 for the KC area.
Methodology & Data Sources
This directory was compiled in March 2026. CSIA credential status was verified via search.csia.org where profiles were accessible (note: the CSIA directory is JavaScript-rendered and does not permit comprehensive scraping; two companies — Full Service Chimney and Chimney Restoration of Kansas City — had indexed profiles confirmed). NCSG membership was cross-referenced against ncsg.org/find-a-chimney-sweep and individual member pages. Business legitimacy was assessed using Google Business Profile data, Missouri and Kansas business registrations, BBB listings, and physical address verification via satellite and street view imagery to screen virtual office addresses.
Non-CSIA companies were evaluated against seven criteria: non-keyword-stuffed business name, 5+ years in business, 15+ Google or platform reviews, professional website, physical address, no out-of-market review patterns, and chimney/fireplace specialization (not multi-service bundling). Companies failing these criteria are documented in the exclusions section but not included as listing cards. Spam and fraud listings are documented in the Fraud Warnings section; they do not receive business cards.
Pricing data is drawn from figures stated in our primary research, including company-published rates (Full Service Chimney, HearthMasters, Chimney Medic) and platform-reported ranges from Homeyou (1,479–1,686 completed KC projects), Angi, HomeAdvisor, and HomeGuide.
